Most Common AC Problems

You don’t need to be an expert to know when something is wrong, even when it’s your air conditioner. Being aware of the most common problems with them helps prevent breakdowns–who wants to be stuck inside during the hot seasons when the AC isn’t working?

AC Running Constantly

It’s normal if your AC is running more often in hot weather, but it will still shut off. Correcting this issue helps protect important parts and prevent your energy bill from skyrocketing.

It’s a common issue, and has many possible issues; from the thermostat to electrical parts. Try turning off the thermostat fan to see if that air conditioner will also shut down. If not, contact one of our professionals to help pinpoint your problem.

AC Not Turning On

It’s a hassle to wake up, soaked in sweat and realize your air conditioner won’t kick on. Even if you turn down the temperature, still nothing!

Sometimes caused because a circuit breaker tripped, other reasons can include a faulty thermostat or loose wiring. You shouldn’t attempt a wiring repair yourself, as they can be dangerous! Have one of our certified pros come out with specialized equipment to diagnose any electrical problems.

No Cool Air Flowing

This issue can appear in two ways. First, you could hear the AC running, but feel no air coming from the ducts. Second, even though you feel some air, it’s not cool air.

Most of the time, it’s an easy fix–usually just a tripped circuit breaker. It’s also possible that the blower belt is worn and needs replacing, or that the refrigerant levels are too low. Regular system maintenance can prevent this issue, and you should leave that to us here. Our technicians don’t just repair existing problems, they look for ways to prevent future breakdowns.

Hot Air Blowing Out

Is your AC pumping out hot air instead of nice cool air? This problem can occur even in the middle of summer, the last thing you want is to come home and sweat.

The toasty air could be telling you it’s time to change air filters, this needs doing every month or so. You may also have an obstruction in one of the ducts, or debris causing the compressor to overheat. It’s even possible that your refrigerant is low. Be sure to schedule a yearly duct cleaning and to have a pro check for leaks before adding refrigerant.

Refrigerant or Water Leaking

It’s not easy for homeowners to detect most refrigerant leaks, because they typically appear in the coolant lines. However, bright colored stains appearing near the AC unit are a sign of such problems. It’s reasonable to see some condensation on the outside of an air conditioner, but excessive moisture can be a sign of leaking water.

Lines and connections in the AC unit will degrade over time, leading to leaks. While blocked drainage pipes and faulty condensate pumps will cause water leaks usually. If you notice your refrigerant is leaking, turn off the unit and call us right away. Low refrigerant levels can do severe damage and it can be a costly repair.

In Conclusion

These are just some of the most common problems you can run into with an AC unit and what to do if you are faced with them. If you need some solutions, look no further than our experts at Florida Air Express.
