A common question among new parents is whether using air conditioning is even safe for their baby! The answer is: YES! Since humid temperatures aren’t suitable for newborns, a properly ventilated room can help prevent the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Best Home Temperature for Babies

A new baby is precious and delightful, of course, you want to keep them as safe as you can. You’ve spent months getting everything perfect – bedding, furniture, clothes. You’ve researched the best of everything… Including the ideal room temperature for babies. They tend to get fussy if it’s too chilly, but an overheated room is even more dangerous. To ensure that your infant is comfortable and safe, follow these tips from our experts!

The ideal temperature for a nursery is going to be between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that a baby will likely be as comfortable as you are – if it’s too cold in your home for you, it’s too cold for your baby–likewise with heat, if it’s too hot for you it may be too warm for your baby.

Other Recommendations to Keep Babies Comfortable and Safe

  • Dress them appropriately for each season
  • Use light bedding
  • Install an attic ventilator if needed to help your air conditioner perform better.
  • Ensure the crib is away from the floor and the wall vents to prevent air from blowing directly onto the baby.
  • Open windows and air out the room for air circulation when the seasonal temperatures are 68-72 degrees.
  • Overhead fans help improve air circulation, offset your baby’s bed so that it’s not directly under it and leave it on the slowest speed setting.
  • Keep your baby well hydrated.
  • If they start showing signs of overheating, sweating, damp hair, rapid breathing, flushed cheeks, and/or a heat rash, remove layers of clothing to help cool your baby off.
  • In cold temperatures, add an extra layer of clothing, like a sleep sack–but don’t over-bundle your baby.
  • Keep all blankets, quilts, and comforters out of the baby’s bed to avoid a suffocation risk.
  • The head helps regulate the body temperature, babies don’t need a hat at bedtime.
  • If a space heater is needed in a room, don’t place it near the baby’s bed. It should be directed away from the infant.
